Spring is here, and so was UNSW Urban Growers Garden Bee! After a successful winter garden beeUNSW Urban Growers hosted a spring planting session on 15th October 2024 at the Barker St Carpark garden. This event was a special edition to pre-celebrate World Food Day

World Food Day was organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation United Nations on 16th October. This year’s theme was “Right to food for a better life and better future insisting on the right to diverse, nutritious, affordable, accessible and safe food for all.

During lunch time, ten enthusiastic staff and students from various faculties and divisions reflected on this theme while planting pumpkin, bean, cucumber and leek seeds. The team also harvested plenty of lettuce and silverbeet, and enjoyed eating fresh strawberries on the spot.

Participants enjoyed installing a COMPOT bin, which is an in-ground compost bin that will digest food scraps, coffee ground or the garden’s cuttings and weeds. During the session, participants shared their ideas on how to compost food at home, including the access to the following resources:

  • Access FOGO collection by your council (check your council’s website)
  • Find a compost near you on Sharewaste
  • Join a local community garden with compost bin
  • Start composting at home with a worm farm, bokashi bin or garden compost bin.
