Go Plastic Free

| 06 Aug 2018

It’s better for you, your wallet and the planet

Australia produces almost 3 million tonnes of plastic per annum of which less than 9% is recycled. Up to 130,000 tonnes of that plastic will wind up in the ocean each year. Studies predict that oceans will contain more plastic than fish by 2050 unless the world takes radical action to stop rubbish leaking into the seas. Most of this plastic waste is of single use items.

What can you do?

1. Say no plastic straw: An estimated 7.5 percent of plastic in the environment comes from straws. Order your drink without straw next time you go out.

2.  Bring your own cup: Good for environment and your pocket, most coffee shops on campus offer a discount for bringing your own cup

3. Carry a reusable water bottle: There are many water refill station across the campus for you to refill you bottle.

4. Bring your bag150 million plastic bags end up as litter, only 3% of them are currently being recycled. Bring your own bag and help beat this beast.

5. Say no to disposable crockery and cutlery: Ask for reusable items. Dine in or bring your own.

6. Skip the plastic produce bags: Avoid heavily packaged items. Voice your concern to the companies.

7. Pack a waste free lunch: Challenge yourself, pack a waste free lunch once a week ... aim for always ;-)

8. Avoid synthetic clothes, they shed microfibres: Be sensible, buy sensible... most cheap items are not worth it.

9. Choose recycled products: Support recycling, buy recycled items

10. Be the change you want to see! Start taking steps to go plastic free. Change is a team sport... share the message and encourage others to join the move.
